Jo from Cliffe, Rochester

Their Story: I started smoking when I was twenty one. I remember that all my friends were smoking at that time and, in my generation, it was a pretty cool thing to do! So I tried it, perservered with it and I got hooked.Previous attempts to stop smoking have been numerous over the years. At one time I even became a 'sneaky' smoker, none of my family or friends knew that I had started smoking again. I felt so embarrassed that the cigarette, yet again, had got the better of me.

  • Day 49

I have now got five beautiful granchildren. I will be sixty this year and it suddenly dawned on me that my grandchildren are so special that I have to do everything in my power to live a long and healthy life so that I can see them and be with them for as long as possible. So I knew that I had to give up the cigarettes, for good this time.I had heard of the NHS Stop Smoking Service through a contact at Medway Hospital. I got in touch with my local Smokefree service to help me quit. I had heard that they had helped many people, like myself,to stop smoking. The support that I received from the group was fantastic. Being part of that group really did help me to finally stop smoking. Knowing that others are going through exactly the same definitely keeps you on track. The encouragement and advise that we received from our trained expert was exceptional.During the quit there were good and bad days. Our group would meet for an hour each week and we told eachother of our high and lows. By sharing our experiences we helped one another to become so positive.I am now smokefree and I feel so much happier as a person. I have so much more energy so I can really enjoy my granchildren now. I am very proud of what I have achieved but I cannot thank the service enough for all their help. I honestly can say that if there is anybody thinking of giving up the cigarettes, they should contact the Medway Stop Smoking Service - it really does work.
