Their Story: David is a member of staff at Medway Maritime Hospital. He originally smoked 40/day and was told by a colleague about the Smoking Cessation Service for hospital staff run by Medway Stop Smoking Service (MSSS) in Occupational Health at the hospital. David called MSSS to find out more and was subsequently booked in to see the Smoking Cessation Advisor at the hospital. After discussion with the Advisor, he chose to use Zyban and also attended weekly support appointments for 7 weeks. David’s quit day was 24th Jan 2009 and he has been smokefree ever since!
Day 49
Initially, I thought support to quit smoking would just be like group counselling, which really wasn’t for me. However, when I called the stop smoking advisor, I was given a one-to-one appointment at work. I found the advisor was helpful and really felt they had time to listen to me, which is something you need when giving up smoking as it’s such a difficult thing to do. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone and my advisor was an ex-smoker so I really felt they understood what I was going through. I’m now so glad I quit – I don’t wake up in the morning coughing anymore and I can walk and talk at the same time without getting out of breath! I’ve been recommending it to all my colleagues at work too!
